Build a native macOS app inspired by Sim Screener: a quiet utility that turns iPhone and iPad Simulator screenshots and recordings into polished, device-framed exports.

Scope: build only the working Mac app. Do not build a website, landing page, checkout, payments, accounts, licensing, or a cloud backend. No iOS companion app is needed. Use Swift with SwiftUI/AppKit, target macOS 14+, and process all captures locally.

Main features:

1. Simulator capture workflow. On first launch, let the user choose the folder where Xcode Simulator or Device Hub saves PNG screenshots and MP4 recordings, plus an export folder that defaults to Desktop. Start watching automatically after setup and on future launches. Also support manual import and drag and drop. Wait for files to finish writing, avoid duplicates and export loops, recover missed captures after a restart, and never overwrite originals or existing exports.

2. Device framing. Support iPhone and iPad frames in portrait and landscape with selectable bezel finishes and custom PNG frame imports. Match the device and orientation using capture dimensions and Simulator filenames, with a preferred model/finish for ambiguous matches. Composite at native resolution with correct screen placement, rounded corners, camera cutouts, and a transparent PNG exterior. Reject unsupported sizes instead of stretching them. Use supplied or appropriately licensed frame artwork and keep the catalog easy to extend.

Apple frame downloads: Go to https://developer.apple.com/design/resources/#product-bezels and choose the "Photoshop, PNG" download for the desired iPhone family (or iPad model). Download the .dmg, open it on macOS, and copy the model folders inside its PNG folder into the app's frame resources. Keep all needed finishes and both portrait and landscape PNGs unchanged, preserving transparency, native dimensions, and descriptive filenames; then eject the disk image. Photoshop is not required to use the included PNGs.

Copy the PNG folders from the mounted volume, then eject it in Finder. For other models or changed links, use the current download links on Apple's page. Follow the included Apple Design Resources license and linked usage guidelines.

3. Quick Access tray. Show framed screenshots as stacked floating cards at the bottom-right without stealing focus. Offer Copy, Save, Trash, Edit in Preview, bezel switching, drag into other apps or folders, and swipe-to-save. Keep pending captures across restarts; only export them when saved or shared. Preserve Preview edits, keep originals untouched, and allow direct export when the tray is disabled.

4. Recording exports. Before encoding, offer H.264 MP4 with a black background, transparent HEVC MOV, or ProRes 4444 MOV. Preserve resolution, orientation, original timing, and audio. Use native AVFoundation/Core Image processing, show progress and cancellation, and provide playback, Copy Video, and Show in Finder.

5. Simulator time. Let users override the displayed status-bar time on running iOS simulators, choose any time, or apply a 9:41 preset. Use Xcode's simctl commands, detect simulators started later, remember the preference, and restore overrides when disabled or quitting. Explain when Xcode or a simulator is unavailable.

6. Native Mac experience. Provide a light/dark sidebar Settings window for General, Capture, Quick Access, Device Frames, Recordings, Simulator Time, and About. Keep capture running when Settings closes, hide the Dock icon, and offer an optional menu-bar icon and launch at login. Persist settings and show actionable errors.

Deliver a runnable .app with build/run instructions. Verify the complete workflow against an actual running iPhone or iPad simulator, including screenshots, recordings, frame matching, tray actions, and time overrides. Every bundled finish includes portrait and landscape artwork. Captures must match a supported device’s native resolution.

Does it work with screen recordings?

Yes. Save an MP4 from your simulator and choose a framed MP4, transparent HEVC MOV, or ProRes 4444 MOV export. Original timing and mono or stereo audio are preserved. Transparent video requires a compatible player or editor.

Do my screenshots ever leave my Mac?
